Ottomans are a piece of furniture that can be used as a seat, footrest or to use in some cases for extra storage.  Rectangular ottomans in the form of bed benches and blanket boxes have been a popular addition to the end of a bed for many decades, but we are seeing these versatile pieces increasingly be used in other areas of the home.

There are now different shapes and sizes to choose from. As a result, there a quite a few places where you can opt to use an ottoman that you may not have considered before. We have summarised the main ottomans available and how they can be used.

• End of the bed

The most popular place to use an ottoman or blanket box at the end of the bed. Ottomans and blanket boxes in the bedroom will serve as a place to sit and put shoes or provide extra storage for blankets, linens, cushions or excess shoes. If you don’t require extra storage you could consider a bench seat. Visually an ottoman or bench seat can achieve a completed look of a luxurious bedroom. We have a beautiful range of ottomans and blanket boxes to compliment a range of bedheads and bedroom styles.

• Under a window

Another useful place for an ottoman or bench with storage is under a window, whether it be in a bedroom as a place to read or in a living room to provide extra seating for guests.

• Walk in wardrobe

An upholstered ottoman is becoming a popular furnishing choice to finish off a large walk in wardrobe.  It makes perfect sense to have one in this area of the home so that you can sit and put your shoes on, or lay your clothes out for the day.

• Living room

It is becoming incredibly popular to use an ottoman in the living room in place of a standard coffee table. The benefits of using an ottoman in the living room is that it will provide a softer more luxurious look and it will double up as a comfortable place to put your feet up at the end of the day. It is also a great way to introduce texture into your living room space. We find that a circular ottoman is the most popular choice here as it creates more space to walk around. Many of our customers use a tray to decorate their ottomans, to burn a candle or serve a platter for guests.

Have you considered a cube ottoman?

In addition to rectangle benches and ottomans we are discovering that smaller cube shaped ottomans are becoming increasingly more popular with our customers. They are lightweight so they are easy to move around the home when extra seating is needed. They can be stored under consoles and even used as seating at desks or dressing tables. We love styling our cube ottomans in pairs in living spaces for a luxurious look. They certainly add a pop of colour to any space.
